REUTERS/Marcos Brindicci/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 23 (Reuters) - The euro edged up on Thursday after data suggested the downturn in the euro zone economy may be starting to ease, although holidays in the U.S. and Japan kept trading activity muted. Earlier in the day, the euro rose against most other major currencies, following the surveys. The survey showed the euro zone economy is on track to contract again in the fourth quarter. Its PMI rose to 43.8 from 43.1, beating the poll expectation for 43.4 but was still below breakeven. The euro was up last up 0.18% on the day at $1.09075, having traded as high as $1.0931 earlier in the day.

The bad news prompted some bond investors to question whether Bayer should sweeten the terms of the deal or outright pull it, one of the sources said. The drug-to-pesticides group priced the investment grade bond on Thursday last week, with the deal closing on Tuesday. Bayer priced bonds with maturities between three to 30 years. It was the 10th largest investment grade bond deal by an industrial company this year and attracted more than $22 billion in orders, according to Informa Global Markets. The events were "not enough to trigger a material adverse change clause in bond documents for investors to ask to be paid back," said CreditSights' Brady.

Oil edges lower in choppy trade as OPEC+ delays meeting

The sun is seen behind a crude oil pump jack in the Permian Basin in Loving County, Texas, U.S., November 22, 2019. The delay stoked concerns that more production could come online from oil producers in the coming months, said Dennis Kissler, senior vice president of trading at BOK Financial. A rise in inventories also pressured prices lower on Wednesday morning, he said. U.S. crude oil inventories rose by 8.7 million barrels last week on higher imports, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said. To support prices, OPEC and its allies will need to not only extend, but increase cuts, said John Evans of oil broker PVM in a note.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 21 (Reuters) - Spreads on U.S. corporate high-grade bonds are likely to tighten in 2024, according to JPMorgan (JPM.N). In a report published on Monday, JPMorgan forecast that returns on high-grade bonds will reach new highs in 2024 that will continue through the end of the year. The bank anticipates total returns on high-grade bonds climbing to 12.4% by year-end 2024 from 1.8% currently. Lower new bond supply next year will contribute to high-grade spreads' tightening, according to the report. At the same time as it expects high-grade spreads to tighten next year, JPMorgan forecast that high-yield bond spreads will widen.

The move, along with other actions, highlights the FTC's interest in pursuing cases involving AI. The agency, which now has three Democrats, voted unanimously to make it easier for staff to issue a demand for documents as part of an investigation if it is related to AI, the agency said in a statement. The agency announced a competition last week aimed at identifying the best way to protect consumers against fraud and other harms related to voice cloning.

FDIC Chair Martin Gruenberg was also cited in the reports as having earned a reputation for bullying and leniency in cases of misconduct. The special committee will be co-chaired by two FDIC board members, acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael Hsu, a Democrat, and board member Jonathan McKernan, a Republican. Last week, McKernan and FDIC Vice Chair Travis Hill, also a Republican, had demanded that Gruenberg recuse himself from oversight of any review. The board resolution approving the review includes provisions "that restrict the ability of FDIC management and FDIC Board members not on the Special Committee to engage with or influence the review," Hill said, noting that his support of the decision had depended on that condition. In a statement, Sherrod Brown, a Democrat and chair of the Senate Banking Committee who last week called on FDIC inspector general's office to investigate, said the FDIC board had taken "appropriate steps" to ensure its own review would proceed independently.

EBOS was due to pay A$3.75 billion to acquire Greencross, and was set to raise about A$2 billion as early as Wednesday, said one of the sources who could not be named discussing confidential information. The license could set in motion a long-running effort by Trinidad to boost its gas processing and petrochemical exports, while providing Venezuela with a much-needed extra source of cash. Venezuela, which holds Latin America's biggest gas reserves, and neighboring Trinidad, the region's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter, would complement each other's needs to produce and export gas. Companies Iberdrola SA FollowLONDON, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Britain will increase the guaranteed price offered for offshore wind projects in its next renewables auction by 66%, the government said on Thursday, as it seeks to spur more projects after its last auction failed to attract any offshore wind investment. Britain, which is already the world’s second largest offshore wind market after China, is seeking to ramp up its capacity to 50 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 from around 14 GW now, to help meet its climate targets and boost energy security. The offshore wind sector has been hit by surging supply chain and interest rate costs over the past year with some developers cancelling projects, while Britain's last auction yielded no offshore wind projects when the results were announced in September with developer saying the price offered was too low. The government said despite the absence of offshore wind, the last auction had succeeded in supporting other technologies such as solar, tidal and onshore wind projects capable of generating 3.7 GW, the equivalent to powering some 2 million homes. “The real test of that ambition will come when the overall budget for the next auction round is set next year.

South Florida storm dumps more than a foot of rain

Nov 16 (Reuters) - A fierce storm packing hurricane-force wind gusts dumped more than a foot (30.5 cm) of rain on parts of South Florida on Thursday, flooding homes and streets, downing power lines and trees and leaving tens of thousands of homes and business without power. The storm, which started on Wednesday, dropped almost 14 inches of rain from Key Largo to Fort Lauderdale while wind gusts topped out at 86 mph (136 kph), the U.S. National Service said on Thursday. "The worst is over for South Florida, but they'll still see two to four inches today before it's over," David Roth, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said on Thursday. The system will also bring two to four inches of precipitation to Central Florida, he said, before the storm moves north to the Carolinas in the evening and into Friday. The severity and frequency of major storms affecting the U.S. in recent years is linked to global warming.

ORLANDO, Florida, Nov 16 (Reuters) - The U.S. high yield bond market is the dog that has rarely barked, never mind bitten, during the Federal Reserve's most aggressive interest rate-raising campaign in 40 years. The 'junk' bond market may also contain less junk than it used to. But changes in the composition of a leading high yield corporate bond index over recent years suggests this might be the case. "The high yield index is a higher quality index than in cycles past," reckons Bill Callahan, investment strategist at Schroders. It is now below 400 bps, and high yield bond investors are the most overweight since January, BofA's latest survey shows.
